The story of Virat Kohli's extraordinary decade in test cricket

When Virat Kohli came forward on the third morning of the World Test Championship final in Southampton, it had been 10 years since the 22-year-old Kohli played for India for the first time in five days. This precocious forward is considered one of the best players of all time. Kohli’s record at Southampton may not have improved that day. Ten years ago he played only four games in Kingston against the West Indies, but none of these achievements reflect his ten years of scoring 7,534 points in 92 tests . The average is 52.31. During this period, no one had collected for more than 27 centuries, 14 of which came from their hometowns.

Nobody has scored more than Kohli’s 27 centuries in this time, with 14 of his tons coming back away from home.

The 32-year-old player has an average score of over 50 in Australia and South Africa, and his score in 43 home tests is impressive, with remarkable of 3,730 runs and an average of 64.31.

Kohli has also scored hundreds in and against all the Test nations he has faced, with the exception of Bangladesh (where he has only played one game).

His best calendar year to date was 2016, when he scored 1,215 points in 12 matches, with an average score of 75.93. However, Kohli has consistently shown world-class performances and has won many individual awards.

He was voted ICC Test Player of the Year in 2018 and was voted ICC Test Team of the Year in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

He was also appointed as the captain of the ICC Men’sTest Team of the Decade, and won the Sir Garfield Sobers Award for ICC Men’sCricketer of the Decade in 2020.  And it's not simply with the willow that Kohli has shaped his legacy.

The New Delhi boy took over the captaincy of India Test in 2014 and skipper for the 61st time in Southampton, now surpassing MahendraSingh Dhoni to lead India more than any other player in Test history.

Only five players in test, none of whom  are still playing, and have captained any national team additional within the test match.

Playing for India is that the absolute high priority on behalf of me," Kohli told Mark Nicholas earlier this year. It’s an opportunity for me to represent 1.4 billion people. It’s a chance for me to inspire people, with what we tend to do on the sphere, what I will do on the field as an individual, and that’s my driving force.

When you look back at how this team of ours has transitioned and got to where we are in World Cricket, there's a good reason for this: that we are absolutely passionate about representing our country and representing it in a way that teaches Competitiveness watching people.

It teaches people that you can compete, that you can beat anyone anywhere in the world, and when you get on a plane to play in strange conditions, you're excited, not intimidated.

As long as we can instill this competitiveness and this belief on to future generations, then we've got left this place far better than what we have a tendency to came into.

From Kingston, Jamaica, June 20th, 2011, to Southampton, England, June 20th, 2021, Virat Kolhi defined a decade of Indian test cricket.
